Oratorical

The purpose of The American Legion’s National High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

Each year students in Texas are awarded thousands in financial scholarships through this program.  District 10, which is the first level of competition, awards $500 annually.  The Department of Texas pays transportation, meals and hotel expenses to attend the state competition and awards a total of $ 5000. The National winner typically is awarded over $ 22,000 in the various levels of competition.  In addition, the travel expenses are paid to the National Competition in Indianapolis.

The District competition is held in early January.  Students should be preparing their orations this fall.
