Yes! I’ll help my fellow veterans by becoming a member of The American Legion. I certify by forwarding this application to the post that I served at least one day of active military duty since December 7, 1941, and was honorably discharged or am still serving honorably. Please send my current membership card.

Print two (2) completed copies of your application. Keep one copy for your records. Mail the other copy to the membership mailing address. Additionally, please submit a copy of your DD-214 or discharge with your completed application. Please indicate your recruiter on your application.

The post will need to verify your eligibility before a membership card will be mailed.
Please provide the post with a Member-4, Service-2, or copy of your DD-214 which shows the characterization of your discharge.

Eligibility Information
If you have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces since December 7, 1941, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving – you are eligible for membership in The American Legion!
*Because eligibility dates remain open, all active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.
**U.S. Merchant Marine eligible only from December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (WWII).
Membership Requirements
An individual is eligible for membership in The American Legion only if the individual – (1) has served in the Armed Forces of (A) the United States at any time during – (i) the period of April 6, 1917, through November 11, 1918; or (ii) any time after December 7, 1941; or (B) a government associated with the United States Government during a period or time referred to in subsection (A) of this section and was a citizen of the United States when the individual entered that service; and (2) was honorably discharged or separated from that service or continues to serve honorably during or after that period or time; provided, however, that such service shall have been terminated by honorable discharge or honorable separation, or continued honorably during or after any of said periods; provided, further, that no person shall be entitled to membership who, being in such service during any of said periods, refused on conscientious, political or other grounds to subject themselves to military discipline or unqualified service.
Transfer of Membership
In order to transfer your post membership from one post to another you must submit the following: a completed member data form, a copy of your DD-214 or discharge, and a copy of your current membership card.
Membership dues at the time of transfer will need to be paid if the current membership dues for that year are not paid in full. Moreover, if current dues are paid, please pay your membership dues for the next year’s membership.
