Christmas Gift Program with the VA Outpatient Clinic

Legionnaires!  Please join us in supporting fellow Veterans in need! This year our Post will be participating in the Christmas Gift Program with the VA Outpatient Clinic here in Austin.

They have asked for gender neutral items to be handed to the veterans at a refreshment table at the clinic the week prior to Christmas.  Last year they handed out over 700 gifts and it’s a great chance to let other Veterans know we care – and about our Post!

You can donate a gift either wrapped or unwrapped. My request is that either way you include a card or note and sign it with your name and “American Legion Post 76”-its a small gesture to let Vets know the Legion is looking out for our brothers and sisters. If you wrap your own gifts, please indicate for the Voluntary Service Staff if the gift if for a male or female.  Here is a listing of some of the items that can be used for gifts:

Mittens/gloves, Scarves, Beanies

Socks (new unopened packages – normally athletic socks)

Wallets

Bracelets

Combs/Brushes

Writing Stationary

CDs/DVDs

Please plan to bring your gift to the December Post social meeting.  Thank you for continuing to serve!

Helping Veterans in Need

Post 76,

With the approval of the Post Executive Committee it is my intent to share how we provide direct assistance to fellow Veterans in need. In order to respect those Veterans privacy I am going to use their initials.

On August 26th the Post received a request for assistance from Army Veteran JB. JB and his daughter has left an unhealthy family environment in the Houston area and needed assistance with a place to stay until additional funds arrived on Monday. Our Post assisted the Veteran with temporary housing for the weekend and followed up with JB over the days that followed in order to ensure he was seen at the VA Outpatient Clinic. Post 447 also assisted with temporary housing and Post 83 staff have offered assistance with permanent housing as well.

It’s part of what the Legion is all about – Veterans helping Veterans with a hand up and I’m honored to have been that hand for our Post.
